Trump says Taiwan stole America's chip industry. But that's not true

Former US President Donald Trump accused Taiwan of taking the lead in the computer chip industry. However, industry experts have stated that Taiwan’s success in semiconductor manufacturing was achieved through organic growth and investment. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) was founded by Morris Chang in 1987, with a unique business model focused on being a “pure-play foundry.” This approach allowed TSMC to specialize in manufacturing and scale up operations for multiple customers. TSMC now produces over 90% of the world’s advanced chips. Competitors like Intel and Samsung are attempting to replicate TSMC’s success. Trump’s remarks about Taiwan’s defense and the relationship between the US and Taiwan have raised concerns, especially in light of China’s increasing threats. The tension in the Taiwan Strait has prompted TSMC to expand production outside of Taiwan. Additionally, the US is looking to boost domestic chip production to reduce reliance on Taiwan and South Korea.
